Choosing a submersible or bore pump

If you’re drawing water up from a bore, a well, or a deep tank, you need a pump that sits down in the water and pushes it up, a submersible, rather than a surface pump that sucks. Getting the right one comes down to a couple of measurements. Grewa doesn’t make a bore pump yet, so here’s honest guidance to find the right one now.

Submersible vs surface: depth decides

A surface pump can only lift water about 7 to 8 metres by suction before physics stops it. Below that you need a submersible pump that sits in the water and pushes it up. So the depth to your water level is the first thing that decides the type.

The two numbers that matter

Total head, how far up and along the pump has to move the water, in metres. And flow, how much water you need, in litres per minute. Your bore’s depth and standing water level give you the head; your use (house, irrigation, stock) gives you the flow. Every pump has a curve showing flow at a given head; you match your numbers to a pump whose curve covers them.

  • The bore or casing diameter, submersibles are sized to fit (3-inch, 4-inch, and so on).
  • Whether the water is sandy or silty, you may need a bore-sump or a pump rated for solids.
  • The power available at the site.
  • What it feeds: a pressure system, or straight into a tank.

Common questions

Can I just use a normal pressure pump on my bore?

Only if the water sits within about 7 metres of the surface, that’s the suction limit of a surface pump. Deeper than that and a surface pump simply can’t lift it; you need a submersible down in the water.

How do I find my bore’s depth and water level?

Your bore’s drilling report, if you have it, lists the depth and standing water level. If not, a driller or pump installer can measure it. Those two numbers decide almost everything.
