My pump is slow to start, or hums before it starts

If your pump hums or hesitates before it gets going, is sluggish to start, or sometimes needs a nudge to spin up, the usual suspect on a single-phase pump is the start capacitor.

What’s happening

A single-phase AC motor needs a capacitor to get the rotor turning. As that capacitor ages and weakens, the motor struggles to start: it hums, draws heavy current, is slow to spin up, and can trip its overload. A capacitor is a low-cost part, but replacing it’s electrical work.

What to check

  • Confirm the symptom: a hum with slow or no start, often with heat.
  • This is a job for a licensed electrician or pump technician. A failing capacitor draws high current and the motor can overheat if left.
  • Don’t keep flicking the power on and off to force a start, as that stresses the motor.

Safety: Capacitors can hold a charge even with the power off. Don’t open a motor’s terminal box yourself; leave it to a licensed electrician.
