My pump won’t turn off, or runs constantly
A pump that runs and runs without shutting off is trying to reach a cut-out pressure it can never quite hit, or it’s being told to keep going. Left alone it overheats, so track the cause down promptly.
The usual causes
- A leak big enough that the pump can’t build pressure
- A pressure switch stuck closed or set too high
- A waterlogged pressure tank
- A pump that’s undersized for the demand
- Low incoming water, so it never reaches cut-out
- A blockage on the discharge side confusing the switch
What to check
- Turn off all taps and appliances. If it keeps running, the pump can’t reach cut-out.
- Look for a significant leak: a burst line, a stuck-open valve, or a running cistern.
- Check the pressure tank’s charge (see the short cycling guide).
- Listen. If the pump sounds like it’s working hard and not building pressure, suspect a suction or prime problem.
- If everything is closed and there’s no leak, the pressure switch is the likely fault.
Safety: If the pump is hot to the touch, switch it off at the power point and let it cool before investigating. Continuous running can overheat the motor.

Common questions
