Can a pump detect a leak? What is actually possible
The expensive leaks are not the dramatic ones. A burst pipe announces itself. A weeping joint under a slab, a toilet quietly passing water, a cracked poly line in the garden: those run for months, and on tank water they can empty a tank you were relying on. A pump sits at the one point in the system where every leak eventually shows up, which makes it a surprisingly good place to notice one.
Why a pump can see a leak at all
A pressure pump holds your plumbing at pressure. When nothing is being used, that pressure should simply sit there. If it drifts down and the pump has to nudge it back up, water left the system, and if nobody used any then it leaked.
The useful window is the middle of the night. Between roughly midnight and five in the morning almost nobody draws water on purpose, so anything the pump does in that period is a signal rather than noise. A healthy system in that window is flat. A leaking one shows a slow sag and a small correction, over and over, which on a graph looks like a gentle sawtooth.
That pattern is what a leak looks like from the pump’s point of view, and it is detectable well before the leak is big enough for anyone to notice at a tap.
What a pump cannot tell you
It cannot tell you where. The pump sees the whole system as one volume, so a dripping outside tap and a failed joint under the house look identical to it. Finding the location is still a job of isolating sections and watching what changes.
It cannot tell the difference between a leak and legitimate use. A toilet with a slow cistern leak, an irrigation controller running at 2am, a ball valve on a tank topping up, a dripping hose left half on: all of these look like a leak, because in the sense that matters they are one. Water is leaving and nobody meant it to.
It also cannot see anything upstream of itself. A leak between the tank and the pump, or on the mains side of a boosted system, will not show in the pump’s pressure at all.
Any pump or system that claims to pinpoint a leak is claiming something the physics does not support without additional sensors in the pipework.
What to do when a pump flags one
Start with the cheap and obvious. Toilets are the most common culprit by a wide margin and the test is free: a few drops of food colouring in the cistern, no flushing for half an hour, then look in the bowl. Colour in the bowl means the cistern is passing.
Then work outward. Check outside taps and any hose fittings. Look for a patch of garden that is greener or softer than the rest, which is often the only sign of a buried poly line.
If those come up clean, isolate. Shut the valve to a section of the house overnight and see whether the pattern stops. That narrows it faster than anything else, and it is the same method a plumber will use, so doing it first saves you paying for it.

Turn the pressure up to find it, down to live with it
If your pump lets you change its set pressure, you have a diagnostic tool most people never think to use, and a way to limit the damage while you wait for a plumber.
To find a leak, raise the pressure. A leak is a hole, and the harder you push water at a hole the more comes out. A weep that leaves nothing visible at 3 bar can become a drip you can hear, or a damp patch that appears within the hour, at 4. It also sharpens the overnight signature, so a marginal reading becomes an obvious one the following morning. Turn it back down once you have found it.
To live with one, drop the pressure. If you have found a leak but cannot fix it today, or you know it is there and cannot locate it, lowering the set pressure does three useful things at once. Less water escapes, so a tank lasts longer and a water bill grows more slowly. The pump refills the system less often, so it starts fewer times and wears less. And the weak point is under less stress, which makes it less likely to go from a weep to a burst pipe while you are waiting for someone to come out.
That last one is worth taking seriously. Most burst pipes were a small leak first.
Two cautions before you turn anything up
Raising pressure is exactly how a weep becomes a burst, which is the point when you are hunting a leak and the risk when you are not. Raise it modestly, raise it while you are at home and paying attention, and put it back afterwards. If the plumbing is old, or you already suspect the pipe is failing rather than a fitting weeping, do not raise it at all: locate it another way, or drop the pressure and call someone.
And stay inside what the system is rated for. The pump has a maximum, and so does your plumbing, which is usually the lower of the two. Higher is not a setting to explore for its own sake.
What to look for in a pump that offers this
Ask what it is actually measuring. A pump inferring from its own pressure behaviour is doing something real and reasonable. A pump claiming to measure the leak needs a flow meter, and most do not have one.
Ask how it decides. A detector that fires on a single odd night will cry wolf until you stop believing it. One that wants a consistent pattern over several nights is more useful, even though it is slower.
Ask how it tells you. This matters more than it sounds. A red alarm for something that might be a dripping tap trains you to dismiss the alert. The right tone is calm and specific: here is what we saw, here is what to check first.
Common questions
How small a leak can a pump notice?
It depends on the system, but the overnight method is sensitive because it has hours of quiet to work with. A leak far too small to hear or see at a tap can still show up as a repeated pattern by morning.
Will it false alarm on normal use?
Anything that draws water overnight looks like a leak: automatic irrigation, a tank top-up valve, someone up late. A well designed detector looks for the pattern repeating rather than reacting to one night, and should tell you what it saw so you can rule those out.
Does it work on mains as well as tank water?
The method works on any system the pump pressurises. What it cannot see is anything upstream of the pump, so a leak on the mains side before a booster, or between the tank and the pump, stays invisible to it.
Do I still need a plumber?
For finding the exact location and fixing it, usually yes. What this changes is that you call them about a leak you know exists, rather than paying for a hunt that starts with whether there is one.
Should I turn the pump off while I wait for a plumber?
If you can manage without the water, yes, that stops the loss entirely. If you cannot, the next best thing on a pump with an adjustable set pressure is to turn the pressure down. Less water escapes, the pump cycles less, and the weak point is under less stress, which makes a burst less likely while you wait.
