Water pumps with an app: what they can and cannot tell you

A pump with an app sounds like a gimmick until the first time one saves you a callout. It also sounds like a great idea until the app is retired and you own a pump that used to be smart. Both happen. This is what to look for, what the technology can honestly do, and where the limits are.

What a connected pump can actually measure

Almost every smart pump reads pressure, because it already has to. A pressure sensor is how the pump decides when to run, so exposing it to an app costs nothing and it is the most useful number you can have.

The live figure matters less than the history. One reading tells you what the pump is holding now. A week of readings tells you whether it holds steady or saws up and down every evening, which is short cycling, and short cycling is what wears a pump out. It is very hard to notice standing next to the pump and obvious on a chart.

Supply voltage is the one people underestimate. Pumps at the end of a long rural run, or on a property with solar and plenty of switching, can see voltage sag or spike in ways nobody notices at a light switch. A pump that logs its own supply voltage tells you whether an unexplained fault was the pump or the power feeding it, which is the difference between replacing a pump and calling an electrician.

Water temperature is worth having for two reasons. It climbs when a pump runs against a closed outlet or recirculates, so it is an early sign of a shut valve or a blocked line. And in a cold climate it tells you when the pump is near freezing, which is the condition that cracks casings.

Motor speed and power draw together show how hard the pump is working for the water it delivers. The same tap at the same pressure should look about the same each time. If the pump is spinning faster or drawing more watts than it used to for the same job, something has changed: a partly blocked inlet, a tired impeller, a filter nobody has cleaned.

Fault codes are the last of the genuinely useful ones. A pump that stops is a mystery. A pump that says it stopped because it lost prime, or because the supply voltage dropped out, is a five minute problem instead of a callout.

The setting you can change without going outside

Most pressure pumps have a set pressure, and changing it means going to the pump, often with a tool, sometimes in the dark and the rain. So in practice almost nobody ever changes it, and the pump stays on whatever the installer left it at for the rest of its life.

Adjusting it from a phone turns that from a job into a decision. Turn it up while the sprinklers are running and you want reach. Turn it down when the house is quiet, for less noise and less energy. Nudge it up after adding a bathroom, rather than living with a weaker shower than you used to have.

It also makes setting the pump up honest. Instead of guessing the right pressure once and leaving it, you can try a setting, use the house for a day, look at whether it cycled more than you would like, and change it.

What it almost certainly cannot measure

Flow. This is the one most people assume and it is usually wrong.

Measuring flow needs a flow meter in the water path, which is a separate part with a cost and a failure mode of its own. Very few domestic pressure pumps have one. A pump can infer a good deal from pressure and motor behaviour, which is genuinely useful, but inference is not measurement and it is worth knowing which one you are being sold. If a listing shows litres per minute in an app, ask whether there is a flow sensor in the pump or whether the number is estimated.

Ours does not measure flow. It reads pressure, supply voltage, water temperature, motor speed, power draw and fault state, and everything it shows you is built from those.

Be wary of running totals generally, from any brand. Lifetime litres or total hours are easy to put on a screen and hard to keep accurate across power cuts, firmware updates and a controller that does not always know the time. A live reading is worth more than a total that has been quietly drifting for a year.

The questions worth asking before you buy

Does it need the cloud to work at all? Some pumps stop responding entirely if the internet drops, others keep pumping perfectly and simply lose the app until it returns. A pump is a piece of plumbing before it is a gadget and it should behave like one.

Can you get your own data out? A pump that will only ever show you data inside one company’s app is a pump whose history you cannot take anywhere. Ask whether there is an API, an export, or any integration with a home automation system.

What happens if the company stops supporting it? This is the uncomfortable question and it is the one that separates a considered product from a marketing exercise. The honest answer for any brand is that the pump keeps pumping and the app may not. Ask anyway, because how a seller answers tells you how much thought went into it.

Who sees the data? A pump that reports when your house uses water is, indirectly, a record of when someone is home.

When a connected pump is worth it, and when it is not

The case gets stronger the more the pump matters. A house on tank water where a failed pump means no showers, a holiday place nobody visits for weeks, a property where the pump is a long walk from the house: in all of those, knowing remotely that something is wrong is worth real money.

The case is weaker for a pump that runs a garden tap on weekends. It will not hurt, but a simpler pump with good protections will serve you just as well and there is less to go wrong.

Be suspicious of any app whose main feature is turning the pump on and off. A pressure pump should decide that for itself. The value is in what it tells you, not in what it lets you press.

Common questions

Do smart pumps use more electricity?

The connectivity itself uses a negligible amount, a fraction of a watt. If a smart pump uses less power than an old one it is because of the motor and speed control, not the app.

Will the pump still work if my internet drops?

On a well designed pump, yes. The pump controls itself from its own pressure sensor and connectivity is only for reporting. Worth confirming for any brand you are considering, because it is not universal.

Can an app tell me how much water I have used?

Only if the pump has a flow meter, and most do not. Some apps estimate it from run time, which is a rough guide rather than a reading. If the number matters to you, a separate inline water meter is the honest answer.

Can I see the pump from outside my home network?

Yes on any cloud connected pump, which is most of them. That is also why the data question matters: if you can see it from anywhere, so can whoever runs the service.
